In Myofascial Release Cupping Therapy, your therapist will use silicone or glass cups to create suction to decompress and stretch connective tissues, increase blood and lymph flow in the area, and decreasing edema/swelling. The cups are placed in position on fascial restrictions and tender areas, to provide negative pressure to the area, lifting the tissues. Afterward, the cups may be moved along or around the area to provide additional reduction of adhesions and restrictions. After receiving a cupping treatment, there is a possibility that you will have reddening or marks that look similar to a bruise on the area that was worked on. These marks are caused by blood or fluids that had become stagnant in the tissues due to injury being drawn to the surface by the vacuum created by the cups. By pulling these deposits from the tissues, the cupping therapy allows better circulation to the area and aids the body. The marks may last from a few hours up to a week or more, depending on your condition and activities. The marks generally become less prominent as your body heals.
Cupping is used frequently by athletes for musculoskeletal problems such as pain, spasms, cramps, tightness, numbness and stiffness. It has been reported to provide relief for headaches, sciatica, arthritis and fibromyalgia, among other conditions. Cupping is not recommended for people with severe skin problems.
